Wendell Arleigh Krogwold, age 96, of Amherst Jct., WI passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023. He was born on March 24th, 1927 to Russell Krogwold and Hazel Kussman Krogwold, on the farm his great grandfather homesteaded in 1857. He grew up skiing in the woods around the Portage County farm with his surviving sister, Pauline Krogwold Velton of Seatle, WA. Starting the day helping with farm chores from age six or seven, and when horses were still in use on the farms, he continued farming in some capacity until the age of 93. When eight years old he would take the horse and cart into town to be re-shoed alone. He completed the Agricultural short course at University of WI, Madison, after high school and made good use of this learning through his farming career. He was open to new advances in farming and genetics, and always resourceful in his approach to farm economics.
He married Effie O. Nerlien in June of 1948 and they were blessed with four daughters, Kathleen R. George (Nicholas) of Pisgah Forest, NC, Marilyn A. Gast (Jeff) of Weyauwega, WI, Helen E. Coomer (Chuck) of Pisgah Forest, NC, Brenda J. Simeth (Fred) of Spooner, WI and a son, Wayne A. Krogwold (Debbie) of Amherst Jct, WI.
He was divorced in 1966 and married Virginia Wrolstad who predeceased him. He married Marge Graetz in December of 2009.
His parents, first and second wife, bother Kenneth Krogwold, brother-in-law John Velton and daughter Marilyn predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Marge Krogwold of Amherst Jct., three daughters and one son, sister-in-law Bernice Krogwold, 11 grandsons, 5 granddaughters and 27 great grandchildren.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing & cross country skiing, competing in many races for 22 years including the American Birkebeiner, a 34 mile race between Cable and Hayward, WI. He was a member of North New Hope Lutheran Church and Sons of Norway. He will be greatly missed by his family. A service will be held on Wednesday September 6th at North New Hope Lutheran Church at 11am. Visitation will begin an hour before the service at the church.
Memorials to North New Hope Lutheran church may be given in lieu of flowers.
