James Austin Thulien age 78 of Scandinavia, WI passed away on Monday October 25th, 2021 at Thedacare Hospital in Neenah. Jim was born on April 27th, 1943 in Iola, WI son of Adolph and Minnie(Beyer) Thulien. Jim graduated from Iola High School in 1961. Following high school Jim worked for FF Mengel Co. He served in the US Army National Guard from 1965-1970. Jim attended training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Advanced training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma(Artillery), Theatre operations in Madison, Wisconsin for college rioting, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1967-68 during war protests led by Father Groppi, and 120th Artillery unit in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He was discharged October 18th 1970. Jim also worked at the Waupaca Foundry for 17 years until his retirement in 2005. Jim was an avid sports fan. He loved his Chicago Cubs as well as the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers. Also loved high school sports and would listen to them on the radio. Jim played basketball and baseball in high school and also played with the Scandinavia Vikings baseball team. Jim married Susan (Miller) Thulien on July 6th, 1996 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Iola, Wi. Jim had a heart of gold and always took the time to talk to anyone about life....and if he could talk about sports even better. Jim was a bit of a gardener, he was so proud of his big sunflowers he grew and his tomatoes and cucumbers. Jim was also a wonderful singer, his favorite song was “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 25 years Susan, His Children; Sons Brian Thulien of Iola, Kevin (Missy) Thulien of Iola; Daughter Amy (Dan) Schaefer of Manawa, Daughter Lori Englund of Greenville, WI, Stepchildren; Scott (Missy) Miller of Waupaca, Lori Miller of Waupaca, Brother Allan Thulien of Iola and Nieces and Nephews. Grandchildren: Javier, Jalen, Gwendolin, Jaric, Skylar, Jestin, Jacob, Alex, Dexter, Sydney, Brody, Lauren, Deanna, Dakota, and Joe. Great Grandchildren: Bryden, Kysen, Milo, Colten, Hayden, Hudson, Maddie, Brantley, Riley, Oakley, and Bailey. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Adolph and Minnie Thulien, Sister Georgia Wollum, Brother in Law Don Wollum, a nephew Michael Wollum, sister in law Ethel Thulien and his beloved dog Toby. The Funeral Service for Jim will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Iola on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Dr Karen Zutz Rendall will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM till 10:45 AM. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Church Cemetery following the service.
