Alf Syvertsen

April 11, 1927 — July 27, 2019

Alf Syvertsen, 92, of Iola, passed away Saturday, July 27th, at Thedacare Medical Center in Waupaca, Wisconsin.  Alf was born in Lyngdal, Norway on April 11, 1927, a son of the late Olava (Stalsen) Syvertsen and Severn Ballestad Syvertsen.  He married Rosina "Rose" Luto on June 25, 1955 in Chicago.  She preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2012.. Alf was 1 of 10 children born on a small farm in Norway. He helped his parents on the farm before refrigeration and modern technology . They farmed with horses and had to rely on salted meats and fish.  At the age of 21 he left Norway and immigrated to the United States arriving in Ellis island where he met his brother and sister in law for the first time.  He then enlisted in the Army and served in combat in the Korean War.  After returning home he met his future wife, Rosina Luto, at a dance in Chicago . They later married and had 3 children.  Alf was a skilled carpenter, working for different contractors and eventually owning his own business.  In 1975 he took a leap of faith and moved to Iola, building a home on North Lake by his other Illinois friends.  Alf continued in the home construction business until his retirement.  Alf belonged to the Lions Club, Sons of Norway and was proud to say he worked at the Iola Old Car Show until he was 90 years old.  In his retirement he enjoyed camping and taking his grandchildren camping. He also enjoyed fishing with friends and trips with friends especially to Branson.  In his later years he walked every day, taking a loop through town and chatting with everyone. He loved the Brewers games and also had an old fashion ready to serve you.  He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.                               Alf is survived by his Daughters: Mary Ann (Russ Rode) Syvertsen, of Iola., Deborah (Al) Domask, of Iola; Son: Gary (Stephanie) Syvertsen of Delaware, OH. 4 Grandchildren: Nicole (Michael) Schoultz, Cody (Austen) Lane, Samantha (Nathan Dotson)  Syvertsen, Seth (Tyler Hook) Syvertsen; Step Granddaughter: Rachel (Tony Reinboldt) Domask; Great Grandchildren; Ronin Lane & Ariana Reinboldt;  Special Niece: Lynn (Don) Haye.
