Everett L. "Ev" Somers age 82, of Waupaca, died Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 at the Iola Living Assistance in Iola. Everett was born in Winona, Minnesota on May 2, 1927, the son of the late Perrie D. and Esther (Johnson) Somers. Ev graduated from Winona High School and was immediately sent off to serve his country as a Navy officer in World War II. After serving his country, Ev continued his supermarket career working for the Red Owl Food Company for 25 years. Ev worked and managed stores in Winona, Mankato, Minnesota and Redfield, South Dakota and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He met Faye Irene Snyder in Redfield. They were later married and eventually moved to Milwaukee. They had three children; Larry, Debbie and Tammy. In 1968, Ev purchased Glenn's Supermarket in Waupaca, then to be known as Ev's Red Owl and later Ev's Supermarket. Ev and Faye later divorced. In October 1971, Ev married Alice Johnson. Ev continued to operate the supermarket until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement, Ev and Alice spent their winters in Mercedes, Texas and summers in Wautoma, Wisconsin. In the summer months, Ev continued to work at the Piggly Wiggly food store (Ev's) in Waupaca. Ev enjoyed spending time with his family, socializing with friends and customers. Ev's hobbies included golfing, trap shooting, duck hunting and working with his Black lab: Heidi. Ev was a faithful member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Waupaca; serving on many committees throughout the years including church President. He is survived by Wife: Alice Somers of Waupaca; Son: Larry (Beth) Somers of Iola; Daughters: Debbie (Steve) Peterson of Owen, Wisconsin. Tammy (Special Friend: Rick) Somers of Vernon, New Jersey; Grandchildren: Krystle Somers, Trisha, Brittany & Logan Peterson, Scott & Brandon Magill. Brother: Don (Delores) Somers of Thiensville, Wisconsin; Sister: Barbara Luodo of Virginia, Minnesota. Sister in law: Jean Somers of Minneapolis; Stepchildren: Jim (Cindy) Johnson of Bellavista, Arkansas; Carol (Al) Schmidt of Berlin, Wisconsin; Mary Stevens of Sitka, Alaska; Dave (Lori) Johnson of Wautoma; along with numerous nieces and nephews and step grandchildren. Ev was preceded in death by two Brothers: John Somers and Perrie Somers; Brother in law: Carl Luodo and Grandson: Tyler Peterson. Funeral Service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupaca, Wisconsin at 11:00 AM on Friday July 31,2009 with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. The Reverend Aaron Winkelman will be officiating. Ev will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in the name of Everett L. "Ev" Somers. Ev was not only a great Dad but was a great Boss and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and past employees.
