Robert "Buddy" Newby

Robert “Buddy” Newby age 62, of Scandinavia died May 11, 2009 at his home following a long bout with cancer. He was born March 18, 1947in Stevens Point, WI, son of the late Claude and Mabel (Rogers) Newby. He married Diane Swenson on July 1, 1972 at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church. She survives. Buddy was a Vietnam War veteran having served his country from 1966- 1968. He was a Specialist 4th Class who was trained in Army Air Surveillance. Among the medals he received was the Distinguished Flying Cross for service above and beyond the call duty. He was a member of the American Post #14 - Iola, VFW Post 9748-Iola and formerly a member of the VFW Post in Bancroft. He was employed as a technician for Furniture and Appliance Mart in Stevens Point. He was appreciated by his co-workers and the people he served. He was a former member of the Plover United Methodist and a current member of the Iola United Methodist Church. He was very involved in church activities including men’s group and a member of the church choir. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and participating in the community theater. He had chaperoned numerous school trips. He had been a long time blood donor. He was in the 4-H Clubs in Plover and Scandinavia, serving as leader at both. Buddy was also known for his wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include his wife, Diane, of Scandinavia; 2-daughters, Jamie (Adam) Jones, Rhinelander, Katrina Newby, Scandinavia; Two grandchildren, Alexander and Derek Jones; His brother and sisters, Daniel (Mary) Newby, Plover, Joan Suhr, Truman, MN., Margie(Don Smith) Newby, Green Bay, Susan Pribel, Plainfield, Cindy (Greg) Bernas, Stevens Point. His brothers-in law, John (Janece) Swenson, Waupaca, Daryl Swenson, Scandinavia, and Warren Swenson, New London. Many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Marv Suhr. Services will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 @ 11:00 AM at the Iola United Methodist Church. Pastor Dale Eggert will officiate. Burial will be in the Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call, Friday 5-8 PM at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola and again on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the church.
