Gary R. Sonnenberg

March 21, 1947 — October 18, 2013

Gary Sonnenberg, 66, of Iola WI, died Friday October 18, 2013 at the VA Hospital in Madison, WI. Celebration of Life will be held November 2, 2013 at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church in Scandinavia, WI from 1 to 4 pm. Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 pm with Pastor Mark Sabin Officiating. Mr. Sonnenberg was born March 21, 1947 to George and Stella (Olson) Sonnenberg in Iola, WI. He attended Thoe School and Iola High School in Waupaca County, WI. He entered into the Army in March of 1964. He received training to work as an Automotive Maintenance, Tank Mechanic, and Marksman (Rifle). While in the service he earned his high school diploma. He served in Germany in the 3rd Battalion 70th Armor US ARSEVEN and was honorably discharged in March of 1967. He was a member of the VFW. Gary loved to be outdoors, spending time in the woods and on the lake. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family, gardening, mechanical tinkering, and woodworking. He was dearly loved and will be truly missed. He married Margaret Alice (Yost) on December 20, 1970 at the Church of St. Nicholas, Middle Lake near Nicollet, MN. He is survived by his children Cathy Hardel (Dale), Jane Thiel (Todd), Nancy Sonnenberg (Steve), and Raymond Sonnenberg (Corine); 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; his siblings Sonia Malueg (Jerry), Gloria Briquelet (Richard), Reno, Betty Harris (Dave), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, eldest son Matthew Sonnenberg (Adelle) and a sister-in-law Mary (Reno). A special thank you to the Madison VA Hospital 4th floor B, Hospice Care, Gary Villnow Law Office and Voie Funeral Home for all of their care and compassion given to our family. The special care Gary received will never be forgotten. Bless you all. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
